Kevin Waite is an assistant professor of history at Durham University in England, and co-director of The Long Road to Freedom project. His first book, West of Slavery: The Transcontinental Crisis of the Civil War Era, will be published by University of North Carolina Press in 2021. His scholarly articles and chapters have appeared in the Journal of the Civil War Era, California History, the Cambridge History of the American Civil War, and the Oxford Handbook on Reconstruction. Kevin also writes regularly for popular media outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, the Huffington Post, the New Republic, TIME, and the Washington Post. Together with Sarah Barringer Gordon, he is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Collaborative Research Grant, which funds this project.
